Toothache

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water, floss to remove any trapped debris, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum. Contact us for further instructions and assistance.
  • NOTE: A toothache can be a symptom of something detrimental to your health. If you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek immediate emergency room attention.

Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Basic Instructions: Hold the tooth by the crown (the top of the tooth you would normally see) and avoid touching the root (the part of the tooth that was inside the gum). Rinse it gently with water, avoid scrubbing clean. Try to reinsert it into the socket. If not possible, place it in a container of unflavored milk or saliva, covering the tooth entirely. Seek immediate dental attention.

Broken or Chipped Tooth/Filling/Crown

  • Basic Instructions: Save any broken pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress to any reduce swelling (in the event of trauma). Keep a note of details of the incident.

Object Lodged Between Teeth

  • Basic Instructions: Gently try to remove the object with dental floss. Do not use sharp objects. If unsuccessful, contact us for further instruction and assistance.

Dislodged Crown/Veneer/Bridge

  • Basic Instructions: Clean the affected area and try to place the crown/bridge back using toothpaste, denture adhesive, or over-the-counter dental cement. In unable to re-position restoration, store it safely and plan to bring it to your dental visit.

Abscess or Swollen Gums

  • Basic Instructions: Rinse your mouth with mild saltwater and take over-the-counter pain relievers. Avoid applying heat. Seek immediate dental attention. Contact your dentist for further instruction and assistance.
  • NOTE: Abscesses can be a sign of something detrimental to your health. If you experience difficulty breathing/ swallowing or swelling is below the border of the jaw or associated with the neck, seek immediate emergency room attention. 

Injury to Soft Tissues (Lips, Cheeks, Tongue)

  • Basic Instructions: Clean the area gently, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed. If bleeding persists, seek immediate attention.

Orthodontic Issues (Broken Braces or Wires)

  • Basic Instructions: Use orthodontic wax to cover sharp edges, and try to gently reposition wires with tweezers. If unable to resolve the issue, contact your orthodontist for further instruction and assistance.

Sudden and Severe Jaw Pain

  • Basic Instructions: Avoid excessive jaw movement and take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed. Soft diet and notate details of the incident to prepare for dental visit. Seek dental attention for evaluation and diagnosis.

Dental Trauma Without Visible Damage

  • Basic Instructions: If you've experienced trauma to the face but see no visible damage, seek dental attention to evaluate any internal injury and establish a baseline for tooth health post-injury.
  • NOTE: Seek emergency room attention if during the traumatic event you experienced:
    • loss of consciousness
    • changes in the ability to breathe, swallow, walk, or talk
    • excessive bleeding or visible wounds elsewhere
